Joe Mafela

Joe Mafela, born in Sibasa, Transvaal, South Africa, and raised in Kliptown, White City Jabavu, and later Tshiawelo Township, initially entered the film industry at the age of twenty-two. His debut was in the movie "Real News," where he portrayed an editor. Joining SA Films, he spent the next two decades contributing as a film actor, producer, and director. Additionally, Mafela managed diverse dance troupes such as Mzumba, Sangoma, and the Gold Reef Dancers, showcasing their talents across continents. Notably, in 1974, he co-starred in South Africa's first all-black movie, "Udeliwe," and collaborated with renowned director Peter R. Hunt in the 1976 film "Shout at the Devil." Transitioning to television in 1976, Mafela achieved continuous success, notably in the Zulu language comedy series 'Sgudi 'Snaysi' in 1986, where he played the role of the unemployed lodger S'dumo. The series' triumph, spanning 78 episodes on SABC, paved the way for Mafela's involvement in other productions through his own company, Penguin Films.
