KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi will head a new national project to fight organised crime. This has been revealed by Premier Thami Ntuli at the handing over of a new building for the police's forensic laboratory services in Durban. Mkhwanazi has confirmed that the so-called Big 5 crime syndicate being probed by the Madlanga Commission will be investigated under the new initiative. He has explained that similar teams like the political killings task team which has been operating largely in Kwazulu-Natal will be set up in other provinces to investigate organised crime. U.S. President Donald Trump has said Israel and Lebanon had agreed to a 10-day ceasefire. In a post on X, Abbas Araghchi says vessels will transit the strategic waterway along the coordinated route already announced by Iran's Ports and Maritime Organization. The US had implemented a blockade of the strait on the 13th of this month. It is not clear if the blockade is still in effect. INTRO: The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) says it is going to take legal steps to challenge the guilty conviction of the party's leader, Julius Malema. This comes after the East London Regional Court in Ku Gompo City granted the defence leave to appeal the five-year sentence against Malema in the firearm discharge case. The court however dismissed the application by the defence to appeal the conviction. Julius Malema has been sentenced to five years direct imprisonment for unlawful possession of a firearm and two years imprisonment for unlawful possession of ammunition. The sentences will run concurrently. Malema was found guilty of contravening firearm controls when he discharged an automatic rifle in the air during the EFF's fifth birthday celebration in Mdantsane in 2018.
