Ex-Convict kills 17 year old in her home

An ex-convict and his accomplice, stand accused of raping and stabbing to death a 17-year-old girl in her home in Umlazi. 39-year-old Sifundo Bhengu was first arrested and sentenced in 2004 to 15 years imprisonment for armed robbery and, in 2012 he was granted parole. During the same year, he was arrested again for violating his parole and sentenced to 5 years in prison. He was released in 2018. The Community of Philani in uMlazi welcomed Sifundo Bhengu with open arms after his release. But On the 28th of May 2024, 6 years after being released from prison for the second time, he struck again in the most heinous way. Ex-convicts re-offending is one of the greatest challenges facing the justice system in South Africa. Could it be because rehabilitation and reintegration programmes are largely absent from the justice system?
