Study Finds Some Women Sleep Better With A Dog By Their Side Than With A Man

A study from Canisius College revealed that women tend to sleep better with dogs beside them than with human partners. Surveying 962 women in the U.S., researchers found that 55% slept with at least one dog, 31% with a cat, and 57% with a human partner. Dogs were shown to disrupt sleep less and provide stronger feelings of comfort and security. Women with dogs also went to bed earlier and maintained more consistent sleep schedules, likely due to the routine that comes with pet care.

Humans may come into the world with a remarkably short list of hardwired fears—namely, loud noises and heights. Sandra Rosenberg unpacks this phenomenon and how the idea is supported by foundational research in behavioral psychology, including the famous 1960 “visual cliff” experiment by Eleanor J. Gibson and Richard D. Walk. In that study, infants were placed on a table with a glass surface extending over a drop-off pattern. Even without prior crawling experience, most babies instinctively avoided the apparent “cliff,” suggesting an inborn fear of falling or depth.

Warrior Woman: Dr Chantel Elston

In another incredible win for women dominating the field of science, Dr Chantel Elston has joined the South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR), where she will be coordinating its long-standing ORI Cooperative Fish Tagging Project (ORI-CFTP). She chats to Leigh-Anne Williams about her incredible career, which is primarily in research where completed her PhD and a postdoctoral fellowship at the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity. She possesses a deep fascination with the overlooked and misunderstood species of rays and has dedicated much of her academic career to studying their ecology. The SAAMBR said that it continues to rely on the greater tagging community (without which the project simply wouldn’t exist) to contribute to its ongoing research and monitoring of fish along the South African coastline.
