Matric Farewell | Importance and challenges of school traditions

The matric year marks the end of high school and the beginning of a new chapter, with matric farewells celebrating learners' achievements and friendships. However, Roosevelt High School in Johannesburg recently cancelled its matric farewell following alleged incidents involving reports of bad behaviour. In a letter addressed to parents and leaners, the principal expressed being "disheartened and embarrassed" by the behaviour displayed by a select group of individuals. Including reports of some learners arriving severely intoxicated, an alleged incident where a firearm was produced and pointed at a member of the venue staff and reports of certain staff members subjected to verbal abuse by some parents. The incident has yet gain sparked a public conversation over whether matric farewell functions remain relevant and whether stricter regulations are needed. We did invite the Roosevelt High School Principal to join us, but unfortunately she is currently on medical leave. To discuss this further, we are joined by Matakanye Matakanya, Chairperson of the National Association of School Governing Bodies, Penuel Mlotshwa, a podcaster, and Onwabile Lubhelwana, spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Education. Before we talk to them, let's listen to the alleged audio of the Roosevelt High School Principal

Motor Industry Staff Association spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola joins us for more.
